Chinese overseas investment has recently begun to branch out from their traditional preferred sectors – energy, real estate and infrastructure – and into a variety of other sectors, including technology.
Chinese investors have recently turned their attention to Indian startups and the Indian tech sector. According to Jessica Wong, investment director at mobile advertising firm Yeahmobi, Chinese investors in Indian tech “consider ourselves as ‘advantage investors’ – with our resources and industry know-how, we would like to get involved with high-quality Indian startups from the very beginning”.
Yeahmobi launched an India-specific fund in 2015 and has invested in six startups in India, with plans to make a seed investment of 500,000 USD each in another 12 startups this year.
Chinese venture capital firm Incapital manages a fund worth approximately 1.2 billion USD, which it invests in a range of technology subsectors, ranging from consumer tech to deep technology. The firm’s founder, Jinbao Xiang, says “We should not ignore India now … Back in China, investors have been misinformed about the country’s potential.”
Chinese venture capital firms invested over 100 billion USD globally in 2015 in an estimated 6,000 deals. India was not attracting a great deal of this investment until last year when China based Cheetah Mobile began considering potential investments in Indian startups.
