Interest from Chinese investors in the European tech sector has accelerated over the past year, according to analysts and commentators including Mattias Ljungman, a partner at venture capital firm Atomico.
“There’s an increasing appetite by the Chinese to look at Europe because they have recognised the opportunities of Europe, which is a huge market in itself,” said Ljungman. “And plus it has this more attractive profile in terms of being a good opportunity in seeing strong growth while actually not being overheated as we have seen in other markets.”
In 2015, Chinese technology firm Beijing Kunlun invested 32 million USD in UK based peer-to-peer mortgage lender Lendinvest. Earlier this year, Chinese technology investment group Cocoon Networks, which is backed by China Equity Group, announced plans to establish a 721 million USD venture capital fund based in London. The fund will be dedicated solely to investing in tech startups in Europe.
This is part of a growing trend of investments in European opportunities by Chinese entities. Investments under 100 million USD by Chinese investors in Europe rose to 2.6 billion USD in 2015, according to Baker and Mckenzie. Private Chinese investors were responsible for 80 percent of these investments.
Naseba has established close ties with a number of Chinese investors. Our investor analysts conduct daily calls with these investors in order to fully understand their needs and mandates. Based on these research calls, a trend has emerged of Chinese investors looking for opportunities to invest in European technology.
On December 7th, 2016, we will be organising the Tech Investors Meeting in Shanghai, China. At the meeting, pre-screened Chinese investors will be introduced to pre-qualified technology investment opportunities from around Europe.
