The Middle Eastern healthcare sector is booming, prompting investors to look beyond their own region for technology and innovation that could help with the development and expansion of medical services within the Middle East.
With major healthcare projects like the Middle East Healthcare Company (MEAHCO) raising 3.2 billion USD from an initial public offering, with 30 percent of its share capital being sold in a total of 27.61 million shares. The company owns and operates Saudi German Hospitals, a well-established and popular regional healthcare brand.
According to the Chairman of MEAHCO, Sobhi A. Batterjee, “MEAHCO is operating in a sector with a bright outlook, and has exciting growth prospects, with a number of expansion projects already underway.”
Investors in the Middle East are eager to invest not only in regional healthcare opportunities like MEAHCO, but also similar opportunities in stable overseas markets like the US and Europe. Within Europe, emerging economies in Europe are proving particularly interesting. Competition for investment opportunities in Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary is high, with foreign investors recognising that these markets offer favourable tax legislation and relatively stable, transparent regulatory environments.
The European healthcare market enjoys the benefits of overall economic stability in the region. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), economies in central, eastern and south-eastern Europe (otherwise known as CESEE) are proving highly resilient to the external pressures that are destabilising other markets. Cities in the region are expected to experience economic growth of between 3 to 4 percent in 2016.
